Hints and tips

REMEMBER YOU ARE YOUR INSTRUMENT

1. Drink lots of water – at least 1 litre per day

2. Avoid things that have a drying effect on the voice - cold remedies, alcohol, caffeine (tea, coffee, coca cola, etc.) Most diet food and drinks, and most non-diet soft drinks contain an artificial sweetener called aspartame. People have found that it ‘dries their throat’, makes them thirsty and can be addictive.

3. Do not use the voice if you are ill, or your voice is in difficulty. Rest the voice – don’t talk so long on the phone and skip the party or pub till the trouble clears up.

4. Inhale steam two or three times a day if you are ill or having vocal problems.

5. Don’t smoke!

6. Keep fit – try swimming, yoga, pilates, or going to the gym.

7. Keep shouting to a minimum

Remember, when you listen to your favourite artists, they are using microphones and all sorts of other technology to ‘improve’ the recording and make the sound you hear. If you try to imitate them you could push or strain your voice. How does your voice feel? If it feels hoarse, croaky or sore after you have been singing then your voice is telling you it’s not happy. Remember, your voice is unique, so you should sound like you. All singers benefit from vocal lessons whatever style you like to sing. A good teacher will teach you how to breathe, and use your voice safely, as well as developing your range and tonal quality.
